How to reduce the swelling of half of the face with a toothache

Swelling on the side of the face due to toothache may be caused by pericoronitis of wisdom teeth, apical periodontitis, trigeminal neuralgia and other diseases, which need to be treated with medication, surgery and other treatments to reduce the swelling.
1. Wisdom tooth pericoronitis: common symptoms are toothache and swelling on the affected side. You can use saline, 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution and other drugs to rinse the blind pocket repeatedly, or use warm salt water to rinse the mouth. If it is caused by anaerobic infection, antibiotics such as clindamycin and metronidazole should be used as prescribed by the doctor, and painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin can be used as prescribed by the doctor if the pain is severe.
If the local abscess already exists, can take incision and drainage, if necessary, need to take the peri-coronary gingival flap excision or wisdom tooth extraction.
2. Periapical inflammation: the main symptom is spontaneous tooth pain, and in severe cases, facial swelling. For those with severe inflammation, combined use of antibiotics such as ceftriaxone and metronidazole and painkillers such as ibuprofen are required. Root abscesses need to take incision and drainage of pus, patients also need to carry out root canal treatment, if the effect is not good, then choose the apical resection.
3. Trigeminal neuralgia: The typical symptom is recurrent pain in the trigeminal nerve area, which can be manifested as tooth pain on the affected side and facial swelling. Patients need to use antiepileptic drugs such as phenytoin sodium and carbamazepine as prescribed by the doctor. If the efficacy of the medication decreases, closed treatment, gamma knife treatment, or microvascular decompression surgery can be chosen.
It is recommended that patients with toothache and swelling on one side of the face go to the hospital, complete the relevant examinations, and cooperate with the doctor to treat the primary disease. The use of drugs should follow the doctor’s instructions.
