We recommend early surgical correction of the baby’s floating thumb, because it is not only a loss of thumb function for the baby, but it is also not very aesthetically pleasing, and the baby will inevitably receive some strange looks when playing with the little ones, which may affect the baby’s psychological health. It is possible to treat floating bunions and there is a chance to avoid these effects. In the long run, it is necessary to correct floating bunions. Our current treatment for floating thumb mainly uses the hemipalmar bone graft reconstruction technique, which takes part of the bone from the second metacarpal of the affected hand to rebuild the first metacarpal, the chances of bone resorption and necrosis are greatly reduced, and the overall effect is relatively good, both in function and appearance. The surgery is divided into two phases. The first phase is to move the bone to give the thumb a better shape, and then after it grows, the second phase is to rebuild the function so that the thumb can move. After the two-stage surgery, the child can be guided to do functional exercises, so that the child can hold a pen to write, screw a bottle cap, or grasp some large objects with strength, which basically meets the daily needs.
