High thyroid function TSH in newborns and how to treat it

Newborns with high TSH need to have a complete set of thyroid functions to decide whether to treat or not.
TSH is a thyroid stimulating hormone that reflects the function of the thyroid gland. Clinically, newborns need to be routinely screened for TSH after birth. If the TSH level is high, a complete set of thyroid function tests is needed to understand the T3 and T4 levels, and if the TSH is elevated in the newborn and the T4 level is low, neonatal hypothyroidism can be diagnosed. Treatment is needed.
Levothyroxine sodium replacement therapy needs to be applied as soon as possible under the guidance of a specialized neonatologist to ensure normal neurological development. The exact dosage needs to be assessed based on a combination of weight and the baby’s thyroid function.
