Reflux pharyngitis, a condition associated with gastric and esophageal reflux. It is a throat symptom that occurs due to reflux of stomach contents into the throat and irritation/damage to the mucous membrane of the throat. The prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux is very high in the population, and some statistics show that it can account for 10% of all patients attending ENT clinics and 50% of patients with hoarseness. 1. Why does acid reflux cause laryngopharyngeal symptoms? There are 2 reasons: a. Direct stimulation: reflux to the throat stomach acid directly stimulates/damages the throat mucosa, causing throat symptoms. b. Vagal reflex: Acid from reflux can stimulate the distal esophagus and cause vagal reflex, causing chronic coughing and throat clearing, which can cause damage to the mucosa of the vocal cords, and can cause the relaxation reflex of the upper esophageal sphincter, while allowing reflux to enter the pharynx causing damage. 2, reflux pharyngitis can have the following symptoms: a, pharyngeal foreign body sensation. b, voice disorder: hoarseness, vocal fatigue easily, etc. c. Chronic cough: mostly irritating dry cough. d. Frequent throat clearing movements, sore throat, sore throat, episodic laryngospasm, bad breath, increased mucous secretions in the pharynx, and dry throat. In conclusion, there are still some controversies about the diagnosis and treatment of reflux pharyngitis. For patients suspected of reflux pharyngitis, they should go to gastroenterology and otorhinolaryngology to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment.
