High total bile acids during pregnancy are caused by abnormalities in the metabolism of bile acids and tend to be a more common and specific condition during pregnancy. If total bile acids are high, they can cause biliary stasis, often with high total bilirubin, and often without significant discomfort if no biliary stasis has developed yet. If the elevation of bile acids is significant, biliary sludge can develop. There are no specific medications available to treat cholestasis. Elevated bile acids during pregnancy are a specific condition that occurs only in pregnant women, occurring in 2-3 out of 100 cases. Itching of the skin is an early symptom. If the bile acid is high, it should be monitored promptly, and the fetus should be monitored at least once a week to prevent fetal accidents.
