Dexamethasone-induced hiccups may be caused by the drug’s irritation of the gastric mucosa, and can be relieved by using domperidone, baclofen, or by massaging the abdomen or acupuncture treatment. If the hiccups are severe, the drug needs to be stopped promptly.
Dexamethasone belongs to the adrenocorticotropic hormone class of drugs, this drug must be used under the guidance of a doctor, mostly used for rheumatoid arthritis, dermatitis and so on. When used, it can stimulate the gastric mucosa, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms, but also can trigger spasm of the diaphragm, the phenomenon of hiccups.
Hiccups after taking dexamethasone can usually be relieved by taking gastric stimulants such as domperidone and skeletal muscle relaxants such as baclofen, as well as by massaging the abdomen and acupuncture treatment. Dexamethasone needs to be discontinued when symptoms are severe.
The above medications are recommended to be used under the supervision of a physician. Hiccups that do not stop should be brought to the attention of the physician in charge for consultation and treatment.
