Does general anesthesia for surgery affect the brain’s memory?

Surgical general anesthesia does not usually have much effect on the brain’s memory.
Surgical general anesthesia is mainly a general anesthetic method to reduce the patient’s pain and facilitate the doctor’s surgical operation. General anesthesia can act directly on the central nervous system, so that the patient’s consciousness disappeared, pain sensation disappeared, which is conducive to the smooth progress of surgery.
General anesthesia drugs can be divided into two categories, one is inhalation anesthetics, including sevoflurane, desflurane, etc.; the second is intravenous anesthetics, that is, mainly from the vein to give drugs, can include etomidate, propofol, etc..
General anesthesia drugs all belong to the central nervous system inhibitors, metabolism in the body faster, if a long period of time surgery need to replenish anesthesia. So the residue in the body is relatively small, usually does not affect the brain memory.
But it does not rule out that some people are more sensitive to general anesthesia drugs, may lead to brain memory reduction, need further research to prove.
