How to Diagnose Whooping Cough in Adults

Pertussis is an acute respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis, and its diagnostic criteria are mainly based on laboratory methods of confirmation. One is based on bacterial culture, but the actual detection rate of bacterial culture is less than 30%, because bacterial culture is subject to a variety of factors such as sampling, sample delivery and laboratory conditions. Currently, the immunoassay of B. pertussis antibody spectrum, combined with polymerase chain reaction, can rapidly identify B. pertussis in pharyngeal specimens with high sensitivity. Therefore, the results of pertussis antibody and polymerase chain reaction in a single serum are mostly used in clinical practice, and the combined application of the two can substantially increase the detection rate of B. pertussis, thus improving the clinical diagnosis rate.
