The main ingredient of betahistine is betahistine hydrochloride, which is mainly used for Meniere’s syndrome, vascular headache and cerebral atherosclerosis; it can also be used for the treatment of acute ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, such as cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism and transient cerebral insufficiency of blood supply, etc. It is also effective for upright vertigo and tinnitus caused by hypertension. Elderly people who have suffered from cerebral thrombosis and cerebral infarction can take betahistine prophylactically to improve blood supply to the brain and cerebral arteriosclerosis and increase the elasticity of blood vessels, which can play an effective role in preventing cerebrovascular disease. Betahistine can also be used in combination with nausea, vomiting and vertigo caused by insufficient blood supply to the brain. This drug may occasionally cause dry mouth or stomach discomfort. Patients with peptic ulcer and bronchial asthma should not take betahistine.
