Nasal polyps are proliferating tissues inside the nasal cavity, which may be caused by metaplasia, edema, and blockage of the nasal cavity may occur when there are more nasal polyps. While the inferior turbinate is a normal structure inside the nasal cavity, the inferior turbinate contains abundant glands that can secrete mucus to warm and humidify the inhaled air. The appearance of nasal polyps shows lychee-like, translucent changes, while the normal inferior turbinate shows pink color, if suffering from rhinitis, the inferior turbinate can show dark red. The head end of the inferior turbinate resembles a hemisphere and can be seen when looking up in the mirror. Nasal polyps are very soft and not innervated, so there is no pain when squeezed. In contrast, squeezing the inferior turbinate causes significant pain and it tends to bleed. Nasal polyps can approach the midline of the nose when full grown, while the inferior turbinate is usually some distance from the midline of the nose.
