Chinese medicine treatment of chronic uveitis

Uveitis is one of the common diseases in ophthalmology. The disease can be divided into anterior uveitis (iridocyclitis), posterior uveitis, total uveitis, and special types of uveitis, such as uveal cerebritis. The disease has many causes and complex etiologies, some of which are closely related to autoimmune genetics. Uveitis is most common in young adults, and in some patients, recurrent episodes can produce serious complications and sequelae, and is one of the common blinding eye diseases that can be difficult to treat. Uveitis is commonly treated with high doses of hormones, such as dexamethasone and prednisone. Treatment with hormones is fast and effective, but long-term use often results in serious side effects and complications. Chinese medicine treats uveitis with a dialectical approach. From the TCM perspective, the disease is closely related to the whole body, especially the liver, kidney and spleen. I have published a paper in the Chinese Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology titled “Clinical Observation of Chronic Uveitis Treated with Chinese Medicine as the Main Treatment”. Most of the patients treated by TCM have good treatment effect, which makes the disease cured or improved. However, there are some patients who have been taking Chinese medicine continuously for a longer period of time, but their condition still recurs and cannot be cured.
