The main reason for smelly pus extruded from an abscess is considered to be because the abscess is deeper in which a closed cavity is formed, creating an anaerobic environment, which causes anaerobic bacteria to grow and multiply, resulting in smelly pus. Therefore, if the pus smells bad when it is squeezed out of the abscess, anaerobic infection should be highly suspected. Treatment of the abscess will first be sufficiently dilated and drained, so that it is in an open environment. Avoid the formation of a confined environment, causing anaerobic bacteria to multiply again, thus making the abscess prolonged. Oral or even intravenous antibiotic therapy is also required, including anti-anaerobic antibiotics such as metronidazole or ornidazole.
