In fact, sleep disorders are a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease patients, most Parkinson’s disease patients will have varying degrees of sleep disorders, and the cumulative incidence of various types of sleep disorders in Parkinson’s patients is as high as 75-98% in studies from different countries. In some patients, sleep problems even appear earlier than motor symptoms, becoming an early warning indicator of Parkinson’s disease.  These three types of sleep problems are common in Parkinson’s disease patients; daytime sleepiness, nighttime insomnia, and abnormal sleep. Insomnia has these kinds of manifestations, difficulty in falling asleep, frequent awakenings, early awakenings. Some studies have found that patients with Parkinson’s disease with dementia are more prone to disruption of the sleep-wake cycle, and combined anxiety and depression are important factors leading to difficulty in falling asleep and early awakenings, while difficulties in turning over due to movement disorders or painful convulsions often lead to frequent awakenings at night, resulting in sleep fragmentation and affecting sleep quality.  Also abnormal sleep in Parkinson’s disease patients can lead to poor sleep quality at night. How is abnormal sleep understood? The essence is dreaming, a night of dreaming is also very tired, so the quality of sleep is not high, and Parkinson’s disease patients with abnormal sleep is often nightmares, and there are punches, kicks, tumbling, jumping, screaming and other violent movements, very dangerous, often causing the patient and the people sleeping with them to be injured.  Patients who do not sleep well at night will be sleepy during the day, and vice versa.  First of all, we need to analyze in detail the patient’s past and present sleep conditions, medication use, characteristics of sleep disorders, and factors that trigger or aggravate them. Through detailed questioning, understanding the patient’s condition, and if necessary, doing sleep monitoring and other analysis, the type of sleep disorder and possible causes can be judged and analyzed, and then individualized treatment can be taken.  For Parkinson’s disease patients with sleep disorders treated according to different causes, doctors can subtract or reduce the drugs that cause daytime sleepiness and nighttime insomnia, and secondly, for poor control of nocturnal motor symptoms, periodic leg movements during sleep or restless legs phenomenon, they can be treated with dopaminergic drugs before bedtime; for rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, Valium drugs can be used; for early awakening caused by anxiety and depression Anti-anxiety or depression medications can be used, etc.
