What’s wrong with nausea after your first hemodialysis?

Nausea after the first hemodialysis may be caused by dialysis imbalance syndrome, dialyzer reaction, hypotension, etc. It is also possible that the patient suffers from digestive diseases.
1. Dialysis imbalance syndrome: Due to the rapid removal of solutes by hemodialysis, the concentration of solutes in the patient’s blood decreases rapidly, plasma osmolality decreases, the difference in osmolality between the blood and the brain tissue fluids increases, and water transfers to the brain tissues, which leads to the increase of intracranial pressure and the change of intracranial pH value. It can be manifested as headache, nausea, vomiting and so on.
2. Dialyzer reaction: patients have an immune reaction to a certain substance in the dialyzer material or dialyzer disinfectant, which is mostly manifested as chest pain and back pain, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms.
3. Hypotension: When certain drugs are combined with dialysis, such as polypropylene cyanide membrane combined with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibiting drugs, the level of bradykinin in the blood can be increased, resulting in severe hypotension, which can cause nausea, vomiting and other symptoms.
4. The patient’s own gastrointestinal disorders can also cause nausea and vomiting.
Nausea after the first hemodialysis may also be seen for other reasons. When the patient experiences uncomfortable symptoms during or after dialysis, it is recommended to inform the doctor in time for relevant treatment.
