Constant hiccups may be caused by dietary factors such as eating gas-producing foods or gas-containing drinks, as well as by disease factors such as indigestion and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can be treated by adjusting the diet as well as antispasmodic, gastric stimulant and acid suppressant medications.
1. Dietary factors: often eat soy, radish, sweet potato and other gas-producing food, drinking carbonated drinks and other gas-containing drinks. This causes excessive gas in the stomach, slowing down the downward peristaltic movement of the gas and discharging it from the mouth, resulting in constant hiccups. You need to adjust your diet and try to avoid gas-producing or gas-containing foods.
2. Indigestion: digestive enzymes are reduced, gastrointestinal peristalsis function becomes poor, too much food is retained in the stomach, appearing after meals, fullness, hiccups and other symptoms. Gastric stimulants such as domperidone tablets can be used to promote gastric emptying, and compound digestive enzymes can be used to assist digestion to relieve hiccups.
3. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): the contents of the stomach or duodenum reflux into the esophagus, causing lesions of the esophageal mucosa, irritation of the esophagus resulting in hiccups. Acid inhibitors such as omeprazole, rabeprazole can be used to reduce the secretion of gastric acid, aluminum thioglycollate gel to protect the mucous membrane of the digestive tract, as well as prokinetic agents such as mosapride, to accelerate gastrointestinal tract movement.
There may be other reasons for hiccups, if the above symptoms occur, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time for early and regular treatment. All of the above medications should be used under doctor’s supervision, avoid self-medication.
