This formula is composed of five herbs: yam, xuan ginseng, henna, atractylodes and burdock, and is a formula for treating yin deficiency and labor heat. Patients mostly show signs of emaciation, mental atrophy, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and cough, and fine pulse. The essence of the disease to which this formula applies is yin deficiency, with yin deficiency of the spleen and stomach being the main cause. According to Chinese medicine, the spleen and stomach are the essence of the afterlife, and this formula is named “Zisheng” to nourish the spleen and stomach, which is the material basis of life, so Yam, Chicken Neijin and Atractylodes nourish the spleen and stomach. Therefore, Zhang Xichen said at the beginning of the formula, “To the Kun Yuan, all things are nourished”, which means the spleen and stomach. In this formula, Xuan Shen has the function of nourishing Yin and clearing heat, and Burdock has the function of calming the lung and relieving cough. Therefore, the whole formula can be used to nourish the spleen and stomach and clear the deficiency heat, which can be used to regulate chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer and gastrointestinal tumor that are manifested by deficiency of the spleen and stomach.
