Can delayed cataract treatment induce glaucoma

As we all know, cataract is currently the most important blindness-causing eye disease in China, followed closely by glaucoma. Unlike cataracts, which can be restored through surgery, glaucoma causes irreversible visual impairment, despite the use of IOP-lowering drugs or surgery, so prevention of glaucoma is more important. Due to the lack of knowledge about cataracts, some people still think that cataracts can only be treated when they are “mature”. In fact, cataract surgery technology is now very mature, safe and painless. Cataract surgery can be performed at any stage, and patients can see normally the day after surgery, and the implanted IOL will remain intact for more than 85 years. More importantly, delayed cataract treatment therapy can lead to secondary glaucoma in some patients, which can instead cause irreversible glaucomatous damage to visual function. For the most common type of age-related cataract, one of the most common types is cortical cataract. This type of cataract has four stages of development (primary, immature, mature and over-ripe), among which the immature and over-ripe stages often lead to glaucoma attacks. The worse thing is that it may cause irreversible damage to visual function. Therefore, cataract patients must not delay treatment.
