After the birth of a newborn, some children will find soft pouches on the top of the newborn’s head. The two most common cases are as follows: 1. Cephalohematoma: This may be due to the rupture of blood vessels under the periosteum in the occipital bone of the newborn, and most children can absorb it on their own in 6-8 weeks. If the mass is large and not easily absorbed, it can also be treated in neurosurgery, such as extraction of accumulated blood and pressure bandaging, and most of them are rarely co-infected and therefore can be absorbed. 2. Birth tumor: due to exudation of subcutaneous tissue at the pre-disclosed area, the composition of which is mainly serum and plasma, causing diffuse edema of the top of the head and diffuse edema of the subcutaneous tissue. The diffuse edema can cross the periosteum and bone suture, which is also the point of differentiation between scalp hematoma and neoplasm. If parents find a soft bag on the top of the newborn’s head, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a formal examination and let the doctor determine whether it is a hematoma or a neoplasm, which usually lasts for a short time and is absorbed relatively quickly, so there is no need to be overly nervous.
