How long you need to sleep on your back after retinal detachment surgery

After retinal detachment surgery, you will need to sleep on your back for anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months depending on the vitreous cavity filler. Retinal detachment surgical procedures include scleral decompression and vitrectomy. 1. Extra-scleral compression does not require removal of the vitreous nor filling of the vitreous replacement, and generally does not require prone lying after surgery. 2. Vitrectomy requires a vitreous replacement filler to replace the vitreous body and put top pressure on the retina. Different fillers have different prone position time. Vitreous substitutes commonly used in clinical practice include air, inert gas, and silicone oil. (1) If the vitreous cavity is filled with air, it usually takes about 2 weeks of prone position time, and after the air is absorbed, you can live in normal position. (2) Vitreous cavity filled with inert gas, generally need about 1 month of prone position time, after the inert gas absorption can be normal position life. (3) If the vitreous cavity is filled with silicone oil, it usually takes about 3 months in prone position, the silicone oil is not absorbable, and the silicone oil can be removed after the retina is restored to its original position, and the patient can live in normal position after the silicone oil is removed. After the surgery, you need to go to the hospital for regular checkups, and the specific prone position time should be decided according to the degree of retinal detachment, the nature of the vitreous filler and the retinal reset situation.
