Removal of the steel nail usually takes only 1-2 weeks to walk normally, but excessive weight bearing is not allowed for 3 months to avoid re-fracture. After internal fixation of the fracture with steel nails, the nails can be removed after 0.5-1 year of re-examination of radiographs to confirm complete healing of the fracture. During fracture healing, the steel nail assumes part of the weight-bearing or force-conducting function, so stress masking can occur, resulting in osteoporosis and decreased bone strength at the fracture site. After removal of the nail, the fracture healing site should gradually resume weight-bearing or force transmission, so that the bone density and bone strength are fully restored and can assume the role of weight-bearing or force transmission of the limb. Therefore, 1-2 weeks after removal of the nail, normal walking is possible, and excessive weight-bearing is not advisable for 3 months.
