Why barium meals are not recommended for young people

There is no clinical statement that a barium meal is not recommended for young people. Barium meals are non-toxic and can be performed on young people. Barium meal is a contrast agent that shows the presence or absence of lesions in the digestive tract under X-ray irradiation. A barium meal, or barium gastroenterography, provides a clear radiologic examination of the digestive tract. Barium meal is medicinal barium sulfate, which is insoluble in water and lipids, and will not be absorbed by the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, so it is basically non-toxic to humans. It should be noted that perforation of the esophagus, gastrointestinal tract or esophageal-tracheal fistula, esophageal mediastinal fistula, etc. are contraindications to barium meal. Barium meal is also contraindicated for severe dysphagia and intestinal obstruction. Because barium meal examination cannot take a biopsy for pathologic examination, gastroscopy may be preferred in young people considering upper gastrointestinal diseases if there are no contraindications to gastroscopy. If barium meal examination is needed, it is necessary to go to a regular medical institution to receive the examination.
