Fecal calprotectin is an envelope protein released by neutrophils or macrophages that serves as a marker of inflammatory cell activation in the body. The common intestinal inflammatory diseases include Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, and further colonoscopy is needed to confirm the diagnosis if you want to know exactly which disease it is. The normal value of fecal calprotectin is between 0 and 50 μg/g. If the value is higher than 50 μg/g, it indicates the presence of inflammation in the intestine, and fecal calprotectin can also be used as a follow-up test for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The value of fecal calprotectin can clarify the patient’s treatment and prognosis, and if it is abnormal, it indicates the need for continued treatment.
