What does a breast cancer genetic test score of 28 mean?

A Breast Cancer Genetic Testing score of 28 indicates that the patient is at moderate risk of recurrence. The recurrence risk score of the 21-gene test for breast cancer, also known as the RS score, is used as one of the indicators for making decisions about the need for chemotherapy in patients with hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, lymph node-negative breast cancer. The 21-gene test contains a total of 21 genes related to breast cancer proliferation, invasion and metastasis such as proliferation-related genes, invasion-related genes, HER2-associated genes, hormone-related genes, and reference genes, etc., and calculates the RS value according to the reference formula. Generally RS<18 is low recurrence risk and can be exempted from chemotherapy; 18≤RS<31 is moderate recurrence risk and can be considered for chemotherapy treatment; RS≥31 is high recurrence risk and should be treated with chemotherapy combined with endocrine therapy. Currently, patients with RS score of 28 are at moderate risk of recurrence, and whether they need to use chemotherapy in combination with endocrine therapy has not been finalized. It is recommended that patients choose the treatment reasonably according to their own needs and physical condition.
