Huang Lian Tang is a meridian formula for the treatment of the syndrome of Upper Heat and Lower Cold (heat in the upper part and cold in the lower part). Huang Lian Tang is composed of Huang Lian, Gan Jiang, Ginseng, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Gui Zhi, Semixia, and Zao Zao. It has the efficacy of regulating cold and heat, harmonizing the stomach and lowering rebelliousness (regulating the stomach qi and making the upwardly rebellious qi to descend), and it is mainly used in treating the symptoms of Heat in the Chest and Cold in the Stomach with abdominal pain. The Treatise on Typhoid Fever says: “If there is heat in the chest and evil qi in the stomach in typhoid fever, and there is pain in the abdomen, wanting to vomit, Huanglian Tang is the main treatment.” What he means is that patients with typhoid fever from the surface into the inside, heat staying in the chest and diaphragm, evil Qi invading in the stomach, pain in the abdomen, and wanting to vomit can be treated with Huanglian Tang.
