Fountain grass is the whole grass of Cistanche, a plant in the family of Ledebouriae, is a kind of Chinese medicine, sweet, sour, warm, belonging to the kidney and large intestine meridian. It has the effects of tonifying the kidney, strengthening the yang, moistening the intestines and laxative. It is clinically used for treating kidney deficiency and impotence, spermatorrhea, cold pain in the waist and knees, urinary leakage, infertility with uterine coldness, and intestinal dryness and constipation.
It is contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency and fire exuberance, spleen deficiency and diarrhea. Adverse effects are not clear.
However, Chinese medicine mainly works through decoction, so drinking water may affect the efficacy because of the limited release of active ingredients.
It is recommended that when using Fountain Grass in water, strictly follow the doctor’s instructions, to avoid blind use of medication resulting in adverse effects.
