Lotus heart is a bitter, cold-tasting Chinese herbal medicine, forbidden for people with cold spleen and stomach, and there is no record in pharmacopoeia or literature that lotus heart is forbidden for pregnant women. The adverse effects of taking lotus seed heart are not clear.
Lotus heart belongs to the heart meridian and kidney meridian. It has the effects of tranquilizing the mind, clearing the heart, communicating with the heart and kidneys (the fire of the heart descends and the water of the kidneys rises, which are in mutual control), stopping bleeding and astringing the essence. It is used for heart-kidney disharmony (exuberant fire in the heart, deficiency of kidney yin, dysfunction of the physiological functions of the heart and kidneys), spermatorrhea, insomnia, heat into the pericardium (heat evils invading the pericardium), delirium (gibberish), dizziness, and vomiting of blood due to blood heat.
