”Atopic” features: (1) familial predisposition to asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema; (2) allergy to allogeneic proteins; (3) high serum IgE; and (4) increased blood eosinophilia. Typical atopic dermatitis has specific clinical manifestations of eczema and the above four characteristics. There are three stages of atopic dermatitis: (1) infancy; (2) childhood; and (3) youth and adulthood. (Not every patient presents, many children get better after infancy and do not present later symptoms.) The etiology of atopic dermatitis is not yet clear and includes genetic susceptibility, allergy, immunity, infection and skin dysfunction. Together with asthma and allergic rhinitis, these three diseases are called atopic diseases. The general course of atopic diseases is atopic dermatitis, then allergic rhinitis, and finally asthma, which can coexist, but not necessarily all occur at the same time. Because the cause of atopic dermatitis is not very clear, the disease has a tendency to recur and itch intensely, which seriously affects the physical and mental health of the affected children and their parents. There is no so-called special medicine that does not recur after treatment. Parents of children have many misconceptions about the disease and its treatment management, resulting in recurring rashes, untimely treatment, and even prolonged aggravation of the disease. However, through continuous communication with parents of children (in-office visits and WeChat groups), repeated reinforcement and timely correction, patients and their families find the triggering factors that cause the disease and try to avoid them, can make correct judgments about the clinical stage of the disease, and can give initial treatment on their own in time to avoid worsening of the disease and even serious complications. Since dry skin is an important cause of atopic dermatitis, and dry skin allows large molecules of proteins and microorganisms to enter the body leading to allergy and increased itching: followed by a vicious cycle of more transcutaneous water loss and drier skin. Therefore, moisturizing is recommended worldwide as the most basic treatment for this disease, throughout.
