The Difference Between Blinking Disorder and Tourette’s Syndrome

There is a fundamental difference between blinking disorder and tics. Blinking disorder is usually a simple blinking or eye disorder, while tic disorder is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is accompanied by other muscle twitching in addition to blinking. Blinking is a normal physiologic phenomenon. Frequent blinking may be associated with eye disorders such as keratitis, dry eyes, or stinging eyes, conjunctivitis, or eye pain. Tourette’s syndrome can also be characterized by involuntary blinking, along with facial muscle twitching, flaring of the nose or gurgling of the voice, unusual sounds, and throat clearing. Tourette’s syndrome is usually not associated with eye disease and is mainly caused by basal nucleus lesions and neuropsychiatric factors. Children with frequent blinking, and other muscle twitching and other accompanying movements, or dry eyes, pain and other symptoms, should seek medical attention in time to avoid delays in the condition.
