Hanxia Houpu Tang has the efficacy of moving qi and dispersing lumps (smoothing the body’s qi and dissolving lumps), and lowering rebelliousness and resolving phlegm (correcting retrograde qi and clearing phlegm from the body). It can be used to treat conditions such as prune nucleus qi (similar to pharyngeal allodynia). Hanxia Houpu Tang is composed of the medicines Hanxia, Houpu, Perilla, Poria and Ginger. In modern times, it is often used in the treatment of hysteria, gastric neurosis, chronic bronchitis, chronic pharyngitis, and other conditions that are characterized by phlegm condensation and qi stagnation. Patients can see foreign body sensation in the pharynx, unable to swallow, unable to spit out, chest tightness, breath-holding, or cough or regurgitation, pharynx is not red and swollen and other symptoms. The drug composition of this formula contains more warm and dry drugs, which is suitable for patients with phlegm-qi interlacing (phlegm evil in the body accompanied by poor qi) without heat evidence. It is also not suitable for those who have deficiency of fluid in Plum nucleus qi; those who are allergic to the drug composition should not use it. Adverse reactions are not clear.
