Is it useful to drink lotus root and rutabaga water for nosebleeds?

Nosebleed belongs to the category of “epistaxis” in Chinese medicine. If epistaxis is caused by fire-heat syndrome, the patient can take water boiled with lotus root and rehmannia root in appropriate amount, but the efficacy of the medicine is limited, and the specific use of the medicine should be in accordance with the doctor’s prescription. The treatment of epistaxis in Chinese medicine requires evidence-based therapy, with the difference between solid and deficiency evidence. Solid evidence refers to fire-heat that forces the blood to move uncontrollably, while deficiency evidence refers to deficiency of yin and fire, or qi that does not regulate the blood, and so on. Lotus root nodules are sweet, astringent and neutral in nature, belonging to the liver, lung and stomach meridians, and have the efficacy of removing blood stasis, stopping bleeding by astringency (treating bleeding disorders with medicines with astringent effect), and are used in epistaxis (referring to all bleeding disorders), vomiting, hemoptysis, urination, and leakage of urine, and menorrhagia (excessive menstruation or dripping of menstruation), etc. The adverse effects and contraindications of this herb are still not clear. Rehmannia glutinosa is sweet in taste, cold in nature, belonging to lung and stomach meridians, it has the efficacy of generating fluids to quench thirst, clearing heat and diarrhea, stopping vomiting, removing vexation, and diuretic, and is used for fever and thirst, coughing with lung heat, feverish gonorrhea (burning and tingling pain in urination, accompanied by urinary urgency, and discomfort of abdominal traction), astringent pain, and vomiting and retching with gastric heat (gastric heat leading to vomiting and hiccups), and is cautioned against in cases of deficiency of the stomach and cold spleen. Lotus root nodules and rehmannia root in combination with boiled water have the efficacy of clearing heat and fire, astringent and stopping bleeding. When taken by patients with epistaxis, which is a symptom of fire-heat, it can alleviate the symptoms, but its efficacy is limited, and it cannot replace the therapeutic effect of proprietary Chinese medicines or herbal tonics. If there is any discomfort and medication is needed, please consult a doctor promptly and use the medicine under medical supervision.
