Where is the best place to treat brain tumors?

Although the incidence rate of brain tumors is much lower than that of common tumors such as lung cancer and breast cancer, the incidence rate of disability and death is very high because they are located in the central nervous system. In addition, many brain tumors can cause acute symptoms such as seizures and hydrocephalus, and the condition changes very rapidly, so patients and family members are often anxious and overwhelmed, and they are in a hurry to save their lives. In fact, the treatment of brain tumor is a systematic project, and the whole treatment process needs comprehensive plan and collaboration of multiple departments. If the treatment process is not smoothly connected, it will affect the confidence of patients and family members, and even affect the treatment effect. (1) Professional. At present, medicine has gradually transitioned from “big medicine” to “specialized medicine”, that is, the subspecialty of medicine is becoming more and more detailed, and some doctors only devote their lives to the diagnosis and treatment of one type of disease. Under this mode, doctors can concentrate their experience, accumulate more experience and provide the best treatment plan for patients. As an oncology hospital neurosurgery department, for the past decade or so, all of the department’s energy has been devoted to brain tumors. Ninety percent of our physicians have doctoral degrees and 80% have studied abroad at the world’s leading universities and hospitals in the field of neuro-oncology, such as Harvard University, University of California, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, which is ranked number one in the nation. Our physicians are in line with international standards in terms of treatment philosophy and technology. At our hospital, we do not deliberately pursue the number of patients and surgical procedures, but are committed to providing the most professional treatment plan for each patient. From the moment a patient is admitted to the hospital, there is already a highly specialized multidisciplinary team planning the treatment plan for the patient. In addition, because it is an oncology hospital, we understand the mood of oncology patients and their families better and are willing and able to devote more time to communicate with patients and their families to explain and provide the necessary psychological guidance. (2) Standardization. The treatment of brain tumor is very different from the treatment of other diseases in the nervous system. Most brain tumors do not achieve ideal therapeutic effect through single surgical treatment. The treatment of brain tumor often requires multiple means of treatment such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. How to choose the appropriate treatment for standardized treatment is the key to brain tumor treatment. We have seen many cases where the treatment at the beginning was not very standardized, which not only increased the economic burden of patients, but also delayed the subsequent treatment and affected the final treatment effect of brain tumor, which is one of the important reasons for the gap between China and foreign countries. As the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”. The treatment of brain tumor should be carefully planned and executed from the first step, and only when every step is standardized, the most ideal treatment effect can be achieved. Since its establishment, the Department of Neurosurgery of the Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has adhered to the principle of standardized treatment of brain tumor, and has achieved remarkable results in terms of therapeutic effect. Affiliated Cancer Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has also presided over the establishment of a national academic group of neuro-oncology in China, compiled guidelines for standardized treatment of brain tumors, conducted national study classes every year, and many famous large neurosurgery centers in China have sent their personnel to our department for study. (3) High efficiency. As mentioned above, the treatment of brain tumor is a highly specialized system project, which often requires multiple treatment steps. Not to mention the ordinary people, even non-neuro-oncology medical practitioners have some difficulties to fully understand the whole treatment process. We have met many patients who were told that they need radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy after surgery in outside hospitals, but they often have a headache because they do not know how to choose experts and hospitals, or they suffer from not being able to register and wait for a bed, and even delay the corresponding treatment. In contrast, the treatment of brain tumor in the Cancer Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University can achieve efficient diagnosis and treatment, and improve the efficacy of treatment. Firstly, the information platform of the hospital can enable doctors of various departments to obtain information and imaging data of patients at the first time, so that they can understand the diagnosis and treatment process of patients more systematically in the diagnosis and treatment and follow-up. Secondly, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Hospital has a strong radiotherapy team, and its equipment and technology are the leading ones in China, so our neuro-oncology patients can receive radiotherapy more conveniently after surgery. In addition, unlike the neurosurgery department in general hospitals, our department is mainly composed of neurosurgeons and two neuro-oncologists who are specialized in chemotherapy, which can provide great convenience to patients and obtain the best treatment effect during the treatment process. In a typical case, an elderly patient was admitted to the hospital five days ago with gradual weakness of limbs and blurred consciousness. The family was told that the patient had brain metastasis of lung cancer, combined with hydrocephalus, and was at an advanced stage, and that the brain stem tumor was inoperable and the life expectancy was very short. Later, the patient’s family came to our department for medical treatment, and the patient was close to coma when he came to our hospital. We analyzed the patient’s condition and concluded that the patient’s poor state of consciousness was caused by hydrocephalus due to brainstem occupancy, and small cell lung cancer is very sensitive to chemotherapy. So we performed ventriculo-peritoneal shunt to relieve hydrocephalus under emergency care, followed by salvage chemotherapy by neuro-oncologists. The patient’s consciousness gradually improved 3 days after treatment. 10 days after treatment, the patient was discharged on foot and has been in good general condition for almost 3 months and is still continuing chemotherapy. Such patients would be more difficult to handle in a general hospital, but in our department it is done quickly and efficiently. In our daily work, we have dealt with many such tumors including metastases, gliomas and germ cell tumors, all of which have achieved more desirable treatment results, which is also the greatest characteristic of our department. (4) Innovation. At present, the treatment effect of many malignant brain tumors is still very unsatisfactory. It is in view of this situation that we are not confined to the existing treatment means, but actively explore new types of treatment means. We have conducted a number of clinical studies on brain tumors to develop novel therapeutic tools, and some of these protocols have initially demonstrated results that have led to better outcomes for our patients. All in all, the treatment of brain tumor is a systematic project, and every step of treatment needs to be planned in a rigorous and standardized professional manner. The Cancer Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University has specialized in treating brain tumors for nearly 20 years and has a high reputation among patients and academic circles. We hope to provide professional, standardized and efficient treatment for brain tumor patients through unremitting efforts, and to relieve patients’ pain.
