Do children with adenoid hypertrophy need surgery?

Adenoid hypertrophy in children does not always require surgical treatment. Adenoid hypertrophy is a common phenomenon in children and can slowly shrink by the age of 10-14. If the symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy appear during acute upper respiratory tract infection, if the blockage area is small and it does not affect daily life, it can usually be treated conservatively with symptomatic medications, such as Chinese herbal medicines to clear heat and detoxify the toxins, glucocorticoid nebulizers, or intranasal sprays to help the inflammation of the nasal mucosa disappear and relieve the symptoms of adenoid hypertrophy. However, if the condition is more serious, such as the child has severe snoring, breathlessness, breathing difficulties during sleep, or even secondary acute respiratory infections, and the symptoms cannot be relieved even with drug intervention, the child needs to be immediately seen by the ENT department and surgical treatment will be taken according to the situation. In daily life, a light diet is needed to control the fat content and avoid cold, spicy and other stimulating foods. It is recommended to eat warm and non-stimulating foods, such as beef, pork and soybean sprouts, etc.
