Questions about tonsillar adenoid surgery

Recently, many children with tonsil and adenoid diseases have come to me for surgery, and there are many concerns and questions around the families before and after surgery. 1.Will the surgery for younger children require general anesthesia, and will it have any adverse effects on the child’s body? In order to ensure the safety of the operation and to avoid the fear and psychological impact of the child, general anesthesia is generally used for surgery. At present, general anesthesia uses intravenous compound anesthesia, and the drugs used are short-acting, which are very safe and will not cause any side effects to the child. To put it bluntly, the child just goes into the operating room and sleeps comfortably, so parents don’t have to worry about anything. 2.Will the removal of the tonsils have any effect on the child’s immune system? Will the child be prone to diseases in the future? As we all know, the tonsils are an immune organ and are part of the body’s immune system. Children who need to have their tonsils removed usually have the following two conditions: physiological hypertrophy that causes snoring and poor breathing; or chronic tonsillitis due to repeated inflammation of the tonsils. Such tonsils are already sick and have a certain adverse effect on the child’s body, which is why they have to be surgically removed. The tonsils are the immune organ of the body, but it is only a very small part of the immune lymphatic ring in the pharynx, and removing the tonsils will not have any effect on the child’s immunity. 3.Is the surgery minimally invasive? Will my child suffer a lot after the surgery? At present, the surgical methods we use are relatively scientific and standardized, especially the application of low-temperature plasma ablation to remove adenoids is currently the international leading minimally invasive technology, this method under the visual microscope, with low-temperature tip melting cut off the adenoids, the operation is very thorough, no recurrence, and no bleeding during the operation, the child will not be in pain after surgery, the same day you can eat. The tonsils are removed with the aid of bipolar electrocoagulation, and the hemostasis is very thorough, and it is carried out directly with the pharyngeal muscle fascia outside the tonsils. 4.What should I pay attention to before and after the surgery? Matters to note during the perioperative period Pre-operative: Before the operation, make sure that the child does not have symptoms such as cold, fever and cough within a week, and that the indicators of blood tests before the operation are normal. Generally, the child should be admitted to the hospital for two days before the operation, and then the operation. Postoperative: Patients who undergo adenoids surgery alone need to have their vital signs tested for 6 hours after surgery, and they can have a liquid diet the night after surgery, and can eat normally the next day. If tonsil surgery is done at the same time, a cold liquid diet is usually required for one week after surgery. At the same time, we should closely observe whether there is bleeding in the operation cavity and avoid catching a cold. 5.Will my child’s voice be affected after surgery? The vocal cords are an important vocal organ, and the surgery is performed in the pharyngeal cavity and nasopharynx, which do not involve the vocal cords, and will not have any direct effect on the voice. Since the pharyngeal and nasopharyngeal cavities are the resonating organs of the voice, if the child’s tonsils and adenoids are particularly enlarged before surgery, after removal, the pharyngeal and nasopharyngeal cavities are much enlarged than before surgery, which means that the resonating cavity of the child’s voice has changed, and in some very severe cases, the child’s voice may become a bit shrill after surgery. Therefore, the more severe the child is, the more likely it is that some changes in the voice will occur after surgery, and the sooner the child is treated, the less likely this will happen.
