When both hyperkalemia and hypoglycemia occur at the same time, etiological treatment and symptomatic treatment are needed.
1. Etiological treatment: hyperkalemia can be caused by excessive use of potassium-containing drugs, chronic renal failure, etc. It is necessary to avoid supplementing potassium-containing drugs, and dialysis can be considered for chronic renal failure; hypoglycemia can be seen in diabetic patients who have excessive dosage of hypoglycemic drugs, and it is necessary to reduce the amount of drugs in such cases.
2. Symptomatic treatment: patients with hyperkalemia should immediately stop using all potassium-containing drugs or solutions, and can promote the transfer of potassium ions into the cells through intravenous insulin and glucose solution; hypoglycemic episodes should be supplemented with sugar-containing foods, such as candies, cookies and so on, and patients with hypoglycemic coma can be injected with glucose treatment.
Patients with both hyperkalemia and hypoglycemia are advised to go to the hospital and be treated under doctor’s guidance.
