Swollen hands in the elderly are mainly considered for the following reasons: 1. Heart failure. In patients with heart failure, due to the reduction of the amount of blood from the heart to the aorta, the resistance of blood flow back to the heart increases in all parts of the body, and the obstruction of blood flow back to the heart in the upper limbs can lead to swollen hands in the elderly. 2. Superior vena cava obstruction syndrome. Due to the narrowing of the superior vena cava for various reasons, the resistance to the return of blood to the heart increases in the upper body, and edema, including swelling of the hands, can occur due to poor blood return. 3. Severe liver disease. This kind of patients, because of the severely impaired liver function, the ability of the liver to synthesize albumin is reduced, resulting in hypoalbuminemia in patients, which can cause edema of tissues, including hand swelling. 4. Severe kidney disease. The most common is nephrotic syndrome, where a large amount of albumin is lost from the kidneys, and if it exceeds the synthesis capacity of the liver, hypoalbuminemia can likewise form and hand swelling can occur.
