Vitamin D supplementation for newborns can be done through sun exposure as well as oral vitamin D.
1. When newborns are deficient in vitamin D, they may suffer from night terrors, crying, excessive sweating during sleep, occipital baldness, and in severe cases, tetany.
2. Newborns should be exposed to sunlight through appropriate outdoor activities, which can supplement vitamin D and promote calcium absorption.
3. Full-term newborns usually start to supplement vitamin D after 2 weeks, with a daily dose of 400 units. Preterm infants start to supplement vitamin D after birth, the daily dose of 800 units, after three months to 400 units, supplementation until 2 years of age after birth to stop.
Vitamin D supplementation for newborns should be carried out under the guidance of specialized physicians to avoid improper supplementation affecting the growth and development of newborns.
