Fever reducing medications for adults generally include acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen, but they need to be tailored to the cause of the illness. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are commonly used to reduce fever in adults. These two types of medications are safer and have fewer adverse effects on the body. Ibuprofen is usually smooth and long-lasting, and can keep the fever down for about 6 to 8 hours. Ibuprofen is slightly more effective than acetaminophen in reducing fever above 39°C. Acetaminophen is more effective in reducing fever than acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is more readily absorbed and will reduce fever within about half an hour of administration. However, the duration of fever reduction is shorter after taking the medicine. If the fever is not particularly high, physical cooling can be done, such as wiping the armpits, forehead and back with warm water, or applying fever-reducing patches to promote fever reduction. When the patient’s temperature exceeds 38.5°C, fever-reducing medications, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen, need to be applied. Specific medication needs to be under the guidance of a doctor.
