Wells and Xingxing and Meridian Combination Points all belong to the Five Loss Points, which are a type of special points, and all have their own therapeutic effects.
1. The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine states, “If you are sick in the organs, take the well; if you are sick in color, take the Xing; if you are sick in time, take the Xing; if you are sick in sound, take the Jing; if you are full of blood, if you are sick in the stomach, and if you are sick from dietary indiscretions, take the He”.
This means that the well points have the function of treating diseases related to the five viscera, the Xing, Lung and Jing points are applicable to diseases related to the meridians, and the He points are applicable to diseases related to the six viscera.
2. The original text mentions that “the well is responsible for the fullness under the heart, Xing is responsible for the body heat, Lung is responsible for the pain in the heavy joints, Jing is responsible for the cough, asthma, cold and heat; and He is responsible for the leakage of rebellious qi”.
Combined with modern clinical applications, it shows that the well points have the role of treating acute diseases, the Xing points have the role of draining heat to treat fever, the Losing points are mostly used to treat joint pain or diseases of the five organs, the meridian points have the role of treating diseases of the meridian circulation, and the He points are generally used to treat the diseases of the six viscera.
The Jing Xing and Jing Jing meridian points, or Wu Lian points, are clinically important, widely used and easy to access, and are the preferred acupuncture points for treatment. The use of acupuncture points for treatment of diseases needs to be carried out by a specialized hospital for comprehensive diagnosis of the patient’s condition, and should not be blindly selected acupuncture points on their own, so as not to cause damage.
