Can a pneumothorax recur?

It is possible for a pneumothorax to recur, and the probability of recurrence is relatively high. Spontaneous pneumothorax, in particular, is more likely to recur. Pneumothorax is generally a condition in which gas enters the pleural cavity causing a buildup of air. Mostly, it is caused by the rupture of lung tissue and the pleura of the dirty layer due to external influences or lung diseases, or the rupture of large alveoli close to the surface of the lungs, and the spillage of air from the lungs and bronchial tubes into the pleural cavity. After a pneumothorax is cured by closed drainage or thoracoscopic surgery, it is possible for the patient to have a recurrence of the pneumothorax, especially if the patient also has emphysema, chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis, pulmonary alveoli or lung cancer. If the pneumothorax is only caused by trauma or surgery, patients are less likely to have recurrence after receiving surgical treatment. Generally speaking, the causes of recurrence of pneumothorax include many aspects, such as long and thin patients, patients with multiple alveoli, emphysema and other patients with poor lung bases may cause recurrence of pneumothorax when they perform strenuous exercise or lift heavy objects; if the patient holds his breath for a long time, or coughs or defecates forcefully, it may also cause recurrence of pneumothorax. In conclusion, after the patient’s pneumothorax has been cured, triggers that can cause high pressure in the chest cavity or abdominal cavity should be avoided to avoid recurrence of pneumothorax.
