After your baby returns to the ward from anesthesia surgery, you need to pay attention to the following details.
1. Post-operative position.
After the operation, the baby should lie as flat as possible, without pillows. The head is slightly tilted back so that the airway can be kept most open.
2. Post-operative breathing.
Pay attention to the baby’s lip color, if it is red and moist, please do not worry, the baby is breathing very well.
If the lips suddenly appear blue, please call the health care provider immediately. It is possible that phlegm or other blockage of the respiratory tract, and the vital signs of children change quickly.
However, this is still relatively rare, so please do not worry too much.
3. Post-operative feeding time.
Baby can drink moderate amount of water after 2~4 hours after surgery, and eat something else after not vomiting or choking. Eat 6 hours after surgery. Try to eat liquid within 6 hours after surgery to prevent vomiting.
If your lips are dry, ask the nurse to order cotton swabs moistened with water to moisten your lips.
The baby will also hang glucose after the operation, and will not be weak because of not eating.
4. Post-operative vomiting.
If your baby vomits after surgery, immediately tilt your baby’s head to the side to let him vomit and help him clean the vomit from his mouth to prevent accidentally choking into the trachea.
5. Post-operative irritability.
Some babies may be a little irritable after surgery. Please be careful not to let him scratch the wound and prevent him from falling out of bed.
Irritability is a normal postoperative reaction and will return to normal within 24 hours, please do not worry.
6. Postoperative pain.
Because there will be different degrees of pain in the wound after the effect of anesthesia wears off after surgery, for the less severe pain, parents can use the methods of adjusting the comfortable position, stroking and distracting the little baby to effectively relieve it.
For some more traumatic surgeries, it is recommended to use an analgesic pump, which can provide pain relief for 48 hours while keeping the child awake.
Some postoperative critical conditions in babies do not occur for the most part, so please do not worry too much. Details make the difference, and I am telling you these details in the hope of better ensuring the safety of your baby. It is my greatest wish that everything goes well for your baby!
