Side Effects of Squid Bone

Cuttlebone, the inner shell of the needleless squid and golden squid of the squid family, is known medicinally as cuttlebone, which may cause gastrointestinal discomforts such as constipation, bloating, belching (burping), and so on, for those who use the drug for a long period of time. Cuttlebone is mild in nature, salty and astringent in taste, and can be attributed to the kidney meridian and the spleen meridian. It is good at collecting dampness and astringing sores (drying dampness and astringing, healing wounds), controlling acidity and relieving pain (neutralizing gastric acid and relieving pain), astringing spermatozoa and stopping the bandages (astringency and stopping the bandages), and astringent and stopping bleeding (treating bleeding disorders with medicines that have the effect of astringency). Cuttlebone can be used internally for treating bleeding in stool, epistaxis (excessive menstrual flow or more than a few drops), epistaxis (vomiting of blood), stomach pain and acid swallowing (swallowing the acid that rushes upward from the stomach to the oropharynx), dysuria (abnormal leukorrhea with blood or blood clots), and spermatorrhea (spermatogenesis), etc. It is used in conjunction with a number of traditional Chinese medicines such as WuBeiZi, CuscutaZi, and ShaYuanZi. Those with Yin deficiency and internal heat should not use more medicine. Individuals who use the medicine for a long period of time may experience mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Patients should not use it blindly, and must follow the doctor’s advice if they need to use the medicine.
