How to treat a hernia in an 80 year old man

Non-surgical and surgical treatments can be considered for hernias in eighty year olds, but the best treatment is surgery. In the case of inguinal hernias, if left untreated, the hernia mass can gradually increase in size and eventually end up aggravating the damage to the abdominal wall and affecting life. For 80-year-olds, if they are frail, in poor general condition or have serious diseases of the heart, lungs and other important organs, non-surgical treatment can be considered first, using hernia bags, bandages and other compression of the deep ring of the inguinal canal to prevent hernia from protruding. If the general condition permits, or conservative treatment is not effective, surgical treatment can be performed. Surgical repair is the single most effective treatment for inguinal hernia. Surgical methods include conventional hernia repair, tension-free hernia repair and transperitoneal hernia repair, depending on the individual. Because of the patient’s old age, minimally invasive surgery with less damage and faster recovery, i.e., transperitoneal hernia repair, is recommended.
