A child’s face is usually white and rosy, but if it appears yellow, you need to be alert to other diseases in the body. There are three most common causes of yellowing in children, namely nutritional anemia, weakness of the spleen and stomach, and liver and gallbladder diseases. If a newborn child has a yellow face, it is usually caused by neonatal jaundice, a phenomenon that can be cured in most cases with timely treatment. If an older child has a yellow face, it is mostly caused by anemia due to malnutrition. The hemoglobin in the blood will decrease after anemia occurs, which will cause the child’s face to appear pale and yellow. It is best to take your child to the hospital for a routine blood test to check the hemoglobin level, and if anemia is diagnosed, it needs to be treated in a timely manner. Children with a weak spleen and stomach may also have a yellow face. A weak spleen and stomach is mainly due to irregular diet and excessive snacking, which causes disorders of the spleen and stomach, resulting in malnutrition and a yellow face. In addition, liver and gallbladder diseases can also cause yellowing in children, so it is best to take your child for an annual liver function test to rule out the possibility of liver function abnormalities.
