You should not drink alcohol after an enhanced CT because the contrast agent has not been fully metabolized and alcohol will affect liver and kidney function. Enhanced CT is based on ordinary CT scanning, through the intravenous injection of contrast agent, so that the examination site lesions are more clearly visualized, increasing the detection rate and accuracy. At present, the contrast agent used in China is mainly iodine contrast agent, which is injected intravenously and distributed in blood vessels. Under normal circumstances, the 24-hour clearance rate of iodine contrast agent is about 95%, and 90% of the contrast agent is metabolized by the kidneys, which may cause some damage to the kidneys, and a few patients may cause acute kidney injury in severe cases. When alcohol enters the body, although most of it is metabolized by the liver, a small amount is still excreted through the kidneys. When injecting contrast agent, it takes at least 24 hours to metabolize it. Drinking alcohol may affect the kidney function and the metabolism of the contrast agent, which may lead to kidney function damage. Therefore, you must not drink alcohol after having an enhanced CT.
