Recovery of the Achilles tendon is a long term process, usually taking up to 8 weeks. After the surgery, the Achilles tendon needs to be repaired by surgery to fully recover, if not, it can lead to retraction of the Achilles tendon and the patient can have weakness in walking or foot drop. A total of 6 weeks of immobilization is required. After the cast is removed, if there is no local swelling and pain, you can do ankle flexion and extension activities and straight leg raising exercises to help increase the strength of the muscles. Therefore, after an Achilles tendon injury, it is recommended that the patient follow the doctor’s instructions for rehabilitation exercises to help recover faster.
