Transnasal pituitary tumor surgery

Pituitary tumor treatment includes craniotomy, transsphenoidal approach surgery, gamma knife treatment and drug conservative treatment, each with different indications. The single nostril approach is to remove pituitary tumors from the nasal cavity, which is minimally invasive, quick, fast recovery, no external scars after surgery and good results, and is the preferred treatment for some pituitary tumors and cysts with well-developed pterygoid sinuses.

The transsphenoidal approach for pituitary tumors is the more commonly used surgical approach in transnasal surgery. This treatment avoids possible nerve damage via the lip and is relatively lightly contaminated, so it is welcomed by many patients and doctors. The advantages of this procedure include (1) better differentiation between tumor and normal tissues for better selective tumor resection; (2) less traumatic than traditional craniotomy, thus suitable for patients of advanced age and poor physical condition; and (3) no need to shave the head, thus allowing earlier return to work and study.

Although the transnasal and pterygoid approach is very effective in treating pituitary tumors, its exposure is smaller than that of the transoral and nasal and pterygoid approach, and there is less space for surgical operation.
