Is it accurate to measure blood pressure while lying down?

Lying on your side can make the measurement inaccurate, and lying down can make the diastolic blood pressure low, so it is recommended that you try to measure your blood pressure sitting down. The diagnostic criteria for hypertension are based on blood pressure measured in the sitting position, so for the average patient, measurement in the sitting position is recommended to be preferred. For patients who are unable to maintain the sitting position, blood pressure can be measured lying down. The sphygmomanometer and cuff should be kept at the same level as the heart, and it is recommended that three measurements be taken and averaged in order to obtain an accurate blood pressure value. Before the blood pressure measurement, it is recommended that the patient should be measured in an empty stomach and in a quiet state. The patient should abstain from smoking, coffee and emptying the bladder for half an hour, and take a quiet rest for more than 5 minutes on a chair with a backrest in a quiet environment. Measurement of blood pressure is crucial to the control of the patient’s blood pressure. For special patients who are unable to maintain a seated position, measurement should be done under the guidance of a physician.
