Traditional Chinese medicine formulas that can be used to treat asthma include Sagan Ephedra Soup and Tingpang Soup. Sai Gan Ephedra Soup is composed of Sai Gan, Ephedra, and Sinensis; Ding Panting Soup is composed of Ephedra, White Fruit, and Sang Bai Pi.
Sai Gan Ephedra Tang is from “The Essentials of the Golden Chamber”. This formula is composed of 9g of Sai Gan, 12g of Ephedra, 9g of Flos Daturae, 9g of Aster, 12g of Ginger, 9g of Cynanchum, 10g of Semen Armeniacae, 6g of Schisandrae, and 2 jujubes. It functions in promoting the lung to dispel phlegm, lowering qi and relieving cough.
It is mainly used in treating phlegm-drinking and stagnation of phlegm, gas reversal, asthma and coughing syndrome, which can be seen as coughing with upward breath, and water-cock sound in the throat. The adverse effects and contraindications of this formula are not clear.
Ding Asthma Soup is from “Regimen of All Miraculous Formulas”. This formula is composed of 21 white fruits, 9g of Ephedra, 9g of Sang Bai Pi, 9g of Fructus Sanguinis, 6g of Su Zi, 4.5g of Almonds, 3g of Glycyrrhiza glabra, 4.5g of Scutellaria baicalensis, and 9g of Semen Armeniacae. Its function is to promote and reduce lung qi, clear heat and resolve phlegm.
It is used in treating asthma with internal phlegm-heat and external wind-cold, which may be characterized by coughing with excessive phlegm and shortness of breath, sticky phlegm with yellowish color, or slight malignant wind-cold. The adverse reactions and contraindications of this formula are not clear.
