Retinal lasers for retinal tears in several passes

A single laser treatment is usually sufficient for retinal tears, but the exact number of laser treatments required is related to the number, size and distribution of the retinal tears as well as the patient’s complications and general condition. If the patient has only one small retinal laceration, 1 laser treatment to the lesion area to encircle the retinal laceration is usually sufficient. However, if the patient’s fundus lesion is more severe and there are also large areas of retinal degeneration or areas of no perfusion, the patient may require total retinal photocoagulation. Because retinal laser photocoagulation is more extensive and cannot be accomplished with a single laser, 4-6 laser treatments may be required. It is recommended that post-fundus laser patients follow the doctor’s instructions for care, have regular follow-ups, and seek prompt medical attention when discomfort occurs.
