Minoxidil tincture and finasteride can be used together. Minoxidil tincture is a peripheral vasodilator that stimulates hair growth in patients with male pattern baldness and alopecia areata when used topically for long periods of time. The exact mechanism of this product for hair loss is not known and is limited to topical use on the scalp and should not be taken orally, or applied to other areas of the body. Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor. Due to the presence of type II 5α-reductase in hair follicles, in balding areas of male pattern baldness patients, the hair follicles in the scalp become smaller and dihydrotestosterone increases. Administration of finasteride decreases the concentration of dihydrotestosterone in the scalp, and in the serum, of these patients. Therefore, it can inhibit the scalp hair follicles from getting smaller and reverse the process of hair loss. These two drugs do not conflict, one is for topical use and the other is for oral use, and they can be used simultaneously.
